"Upcoming City Commission Election"
Mar-03-08, 09:00 PM (CST)

Do you think that the Iola Commissioner that is up for re-election will win? I understand he is in some hot water with the Kansas Wildlife and Parks. I'm curious as to why the paper hasn't printed anything about it. Maybe the old addage is correct, Money talks and bull**** walks. Hmmmm makes a person wonder doesnt it.

Why don't you just call the KDWP game warden and find out what happened and then report back? You will find out nothing happened!!

Can't see how being in hot water with KWP will affect the election.

What the commissioner has or hasn't done that represents the best interest of the residents should be what matters. Just like the other candidate, what does each have to offer the residents? I haven't heard from either candidate on why I should cast my ballot for him or her. One would think by now they'd be debating the issues, mailing fliers and seeking votes.

Why should it be in the paper if he is in hot water with KWP? KWP might have issued him a citation but then again that wouldn't be in the paper unless he appeared in court or paid a fine in this county. Even so, not all court cases appear in the paper since it doesn't take much to keep them from being in print. I've been told that just a simple request can keep your name out of the court report.

Now if he was in hot water with KWP and his so called trouble with them fell under Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 20, Federal jurisdiction would apply and it would be handled in the federal court in Wichita. Once again not making the local paper.

Rooster,

KDWP is a state entity, KDWP stands for Kansas Department Of Wildlife and Parks. The key here is Kansas..

I wish someone would call the game warden and report back to this post..

Yep know very well who they are and what they do!

Too many questions to be asked!!

Did he in fact receive a citation?

Which county was the citation issued?

Was the citation issued by one of the 70 Kansas game wardens or was it issued by one of the Federal game wardens?

If the citation is for migratory birds it comes under Federal Law, Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 20 not state and would be handled in the federal court in Wichita not in the county court.

ok since everyone on here is all so smart and everything then someone tell me about the letter to the register forum last week by mr erbert. he says,

"Why is it that I can buy my electric so much cheaper from Westar than Iola can? The spending has got to stop.
I believe our only chance to achieve this goal is to keep Craig Abbott as commissioner. Make sure you all get out to vote."

how does he figure mr abbott is his only hope? if mr abbott can fix the problem of high utilities why hasnt he already done that. he has certainly been on the commission long enough to have made a difference if he wanted to.

maybe it is time to let someone else try where the current commission seems to have failed if mr erbert is right about our utilities being higher because of their decisions.

Reading over the Iola City Commission minutes for 2005 and 2006 it says that Commissioner Abbott voted to increase water rates on September 27, 2005, Electric rates on October 25, 2005, and Sewer rates in October of 2006.

The only no vote I found in regards to utilites was he was not in favor of a rate cut for industry users. I didn't get around to reading any of the 2007 minutes as of yet. They are posted on city website by the way.

I do believe that the rate increases were requird because the three prior people in office (McRae/Hawk/Gumfory) allowed the utility reserves (money) to run short.

I'm not sure a change at this time is in the best interest of the residents of Iola. Especially with a member of the group called Thrive!!

That could be true. Reading those commission minutes is a boring task, but I do remember something about not raising rates to replinish the reserves, but I'm not going to read those again for some time.

Point is, Abbott did vote to raise utility rates many times. Whether they were needed or not, I don't know. I think the letter in the paper touted him as a savior to cheap utility rates. That's obviously not the case in the previous term.

I think change is needed to be progressive. That scares older folks who look for reasons to remain stagnant, whether they are a good excuse or not. I can't vote in the city election, but if I could, I'd lean toward the change.

I'm the Ghost, and I approved this message.

You are correct in many of your statements. Who made the motion for the increase (Abbott?) and who else voted for it?

The only statement I not so sure about is your last one.

Most of us older people aren't afraid of change or are stagnant in our way of thinking. Living in Iola and seeing what has transpired over the years reflects that not all changes are for the good of the residents. Loads of money was wasted on the power plant (generators), water plant that doesn't make any better tasting water than we had before, the work on North State Street (still floods during a heavy downpour), taking both sides of North Kentucky to Oregon Rd are some prime examples of progressive waste of tax payers dollars. I try my best knowing the difference between a "want" and a "need" which isn't always what the past/present 3 in power have done.

Nancy Maier mailed out a flier that didn't impress me much at all except made me feel that she just might be another of those that are trying to make Iola be like a big city. Which in turn will just raise our taxes all that much higher.

She didn't state what she'd do that is different from what Craig Abbott has done or what he is doing. So I'll wait to see what Nancy Maier has to say before I decide on which candidate I'll vote for.

A source close to the investigation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed to me this is going to be charged in the Federal Court if charges are filed.

Why not, you asked a question and I voiced my opinion on both items that you mentioned.

Does his being in trouble, if he is, affect his ability to serve as a commissioner? Not to any of the residents I've visited with only his ability to make the right decisions as a commissioner!!

Have you noticed the past Mayor is backing the other candidate?

There is a lot of that bull stuff on these forums. And I think that it would be an issue of good or bad character. It should be considered. Anyone else that makes a bad decision is crucified by certain parties on here. Must be one of their cronies.

Beats the heck out of me who countrytime is calling "cronies".

Maybe she meant "crone" but doubt if she is aware of what either "cronies" or "crone" means.
