"Is it a time for major changes?"
Jun-07-08, 10:11 PM (CST)

The residents of Iola as well as the county are going to be making some important decisions in the next coming months. We have candidates for both county commissioner seats and for sheriff.

The city wants to renew the half cent sales tax for another 5 or more years for better streets. Dang wonder why North State street still floods when we have a rain shower?? Also why so many of the side streets are full of pot holes? They've been collecting all that tax many for so many years one would think that all the streets and curbs would be in good to excellent condition.

The city isn't going to repair or replace the steam generators which produce a cheaper means of producing electricity over natural gas or diesel. Not sure I understand the reasoning behind that decision since what the power plant is using now sure isn't saving us any money!!

The school board is bound and determined that we need to build one multi-million dollar school complex out in the county. Guess they figure we can all afford running more buses on $4.64 diesel to bus every child in the city and county to that school building located in the county.

The county is bound and determined to build a ambulance barn so we can pay the more expensive paramedics to live in a building with us tax payers picking up the tab for the utilities.

The county is also considering on building a new hospital.

I am almost to the point of believing it might be best to remove the whole lot and start with a new group of decision makers. The current group are all spend happy with our tax dollars and we have just lost 100+ homes/property from the tax rolls. Just maybe replacing the current crew with either McIntosh, Beck, Francis and Maness they can rope in some of this needless spending!! Then we can start on the city commissioners and the school board!!

There must be a solution to end this wanting every thing in the city/county to be brand new!!

Ok, once again the story about the county wide ambulance is changing. In last nights paper the commissioners made it sound like they NEVER intended to remove the ambulance from Moran. Come on people...anyone trying to keep up with what is going on with this knows that has been stated several times that is exactly what they intend. I for one am tired of all this being sneaky crap. They say one thing one day and then tell us the next we misunderstood. It is all in black and white in the newspaper over and over again. Now they are buying a SMALL piece of land for $75,000.00!!! You could buy 30-40 acres for that price. Also isn't it kinda funny a county commissioner is the selling agent? Talk about shady dealings.
They are making it sound like Iola is trying to rip them off by not wanting to continue paying the current ambulance taxes. Why should they if they don't use the county ambulance? Also the report of having techs for ALS runs is not true, sometimes that run sits and waits for 1-2 hours before they can round up a qualified person to take the call.
My biggest gripe is them not being truthful and everything being a big secret. If they are being truthful why all the sneaking around?

Kind of like the shell game. Kind of curious as to what would happen to the commission money if it is forfeited? Do the land owners keep that and then they get even more for their piece of
property that nobody was willing to pay such an extreme price for. Just because x amount of dollars is alloted for the purchase doesn't mean that they have to get as close as possible to spending it all. Well, we know that a certain
commissioner is on the way out, so it seems like he is going to cause as much damage as possible on the way. If I am right, don't these landowners also own the car dealership? Seems like a curious relationship has developed between the commissioner, the landowner/car dealer and winners of certain objects. Truth or rumor ? A lot of extreme conflicts of interest going on.

I agree totally silentbob! Everything that the county has been doing lately has been a huge secret. Aparently there is no such thing as transparent government. All I have heard about lately seems to be that the City of Iola and Allen County cant agree on ambulance service. I think it worked fine for a number of years and of course with government "if it aint broke try to fix it" seems to be policy. I am only hoping that the new commisioner or commisioners will have the best interest of all involved. Either way I am glad I dont live in Moran or Humboldt or even in the county because no matter what happens at least Iola will have good medical response.

I agree. But hopefully things will work out in the end. Maybe some common sense will prevail.

I am in total agreement. Seems like the area powers that be have lost their senses. But then, maybe they can't see the whole
picture . I guess their jobs must pay pretty well. The average person can not afford what they are asking.
Now is the time for the citizens to try for better management.
I will be there.

what a bunch of whiners!!! why don't you all come on up to my county and see what life is like where nobody plans or wants to do anything new. we watch as people leave and nobody else comes in to replace them. meanwhile there are fewer and fewer of us who still have to pay for basic services but a at a higher rate because others found no reason to stay. be proud of your town for having vision and wanting to do more than wait to die. in tonights paper i see you are looking at new housing. new houses will provide more tax money than the old ones you lost in the flood and if you have a few new things maybe people who work in iola wont have to live somewhere else. maybe with $4 gas they will move from surrounding towns to iola so they dont have to travel so far to work. the more people who are attracted to your town the less everything will cost you individually. but you have to build and invest in your town first. people wont come to iola hoping things will get better. they come when you make it better. i am encouraged enough that i may soon move to iola. it is a good place to work. just think if it could also be a good place to live and send your kids to school and stuff.

This isn't a matter of whinning or complaining, this is a matter of facts!! There isn't anything wrong with having vision but one must learn how to live within their income!!

We have lost population the same as most other rural areas have. The population in Allen County has changed: 2000 14,385; 2006 13,677; 2007 13,414. (In 2004 the county had 14.6% of the population living below the poverty level. With the cost of living increasing as it has, I'm sure that the numbers for those now in the poverty level has doubled if not tripled since 2004.) Iola: 1990 6,351; 2000 6,302; 2006 5,966 (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2007 Population Estimates)

We have lost 100+ properties from the county tax rolls. (Which causes the lost of $30,000+ in property taxes.)

Every county ambulance will set within 8 miles of the west county line while the county is 26 miles wide!! Run a north to south line straight down eight miles from the woodson county line and look at the entire area on the east side of that line that will soon be without ambulance service. We have doubled if not tripled the number of ambulance personnel and are now paying the paramedics more to do the work that was once done by the EMT's. Even when a paramedic isn't required to make an ambulance run so we pay for services that aren't needed or required. Take a closer read of the local rag and the comments of the editor about the ambulance fiasco that was brought on by the county!!

The county is also looking at building a new hospital and I was told by a land owner that some of his land was being looked at. Who knows what else the county has on their minds that they aren't talking about to the public. Maybe a building for the Emergency Manager. There are probably a few other projects that the county has in mind that haven't been released to the general population!

The city, is doing away with 2 steam generators to go for generators that use alternate fuel. Wait a minute, what is alternate fuel, diesel or natural gas, surely they don't plan on burning wood to generate electricity. Steam generators are by far the cheapest way to generate electricity but we aren't going to repair the two we have.

The city wants to extend the sales tax for street repair. Well, come look at the streets in Iola and then tell me how my tax dollars were used. State street floods with every shower and Cottonwood sure didn't require to be torn apart and rebuild.
Now they are talking about increasing the sales tax to build a new swimming pool. I'm sure there are a few other projects that the city has going on too that haven't been released to the general population!

Now the school board wants a K to 12 school build out in the county which will just add to fuel cost to bus all the city children to the county.

As for housing, the paper states we have at least 60 vacant houses in Iola. I have three in my neighborhood & 2 of them have been vacant for at least a year. Take a closer look at the requirements for the housing they want to build. Then ask yourself how many business in Iola pay $10.00 an hour? Not many so that eliminates most of the residents in Iola from meeting their requirements. You might even read the comments made by Commissioner Craig Abbott in the local rag dated ll JUN about that new housing.

The paper has also carried some of the same concerns made by those seeking office to replace what we now have serving us.

So FavoredBabe you should come live in Iola, Allen County, and keep abreast of all that is going on before you start calling posters whiners! After all it is our dollars not yours that we are concerned about.

You seem to be offended by everyone's opinion but your own.
Look at your own posts and you will see plenty of whining.
I guess we can only hope that you will move to Iola and set everything straight.
If you don't even live in the county , then you don't really
know what you are talking about.
Here's a thought. Maybe you could use your influence to set things straight where you do live. Instead of butting in to a place where you don't.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a cap on the
over eager spenders.
But, like you, they don't care how much it costs the taxpayers.
After all, it's not coming out of their pockets. Or yours.
Nobody was saying not to build something new. Just not all at once.

Three cheers for Rooster and Countrytime!!! If Iola were a suburb of KC we might have a chance at being able to pay for all the new buildings and such that the commissioners want.

As for the housing situation...as I said before, who is going to live there? Rooster is right on point!

It's time for the big wigs to come to their senses and realize that Iola is dwindling, has been for years.

my aren't we all just a little testy? okay, i can take it. if it makes you feel better to be negative, you go for it. why would a non-iola resident want to suggest life is better than you want to believe?

Well, gosh! The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Why wouldn't a non-Iola resident suggest life is better? Live in Colony where the gas is free?

Oh come on FavoredBabe, wake up and take a closer look at what is going on!!! Not sure how you can say we are being negative with our comments when almost everything posted is based on what comes out of the meetings held by the city, county and school board.

There has to be a point where we elect some people that realize that the residents of this county don't all have deep pockets filled with money. That they curb some of this spending on fixing things that aren't broke!!

Life is better for whom? Life is great for me but it isn't for the elderly widow lady that is on the verge of losing her home because she is living on a fixed income having a hard time to make ends meet already? For the family that has to decide if they can afford to pay their monthly bills or buy enough food to last them to the next pay day.

Come down here and take a visit with the person in charge of the utility office. Take a long look at the list of both groups that are already living hand to mouth day in and day out with the list growing every month.
