"Have you noticed?"
Jul-02-08, 11:03 PM (CST)

LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-08 AT 10:42 PM (CST)

Driving around town noticing that some people have a Regehr and a McIntosh sign in their yard! Are they confused as who they are supporting or just don't want to hurt feelings by telling one of them "NO THANKS"?

I did have one man tell me that he allowed Regehr to put a sign on his property but wasn't sure he'd vote for him. Why would you place a sign in your yard for a candidate if you aren't supporting him?

Wonder when and if we'll see any signs from the other candidates? There is an election sign for Tom Williams nailed to a fence post on the east side of the blacktop just north of Humboldt that has been there since the last election!!

Many are not happy with Tom for him wearing more hats than he was elected to wear and of course his handling of the airport incident. Then too, some just believe he is a politician more than a Sheriff!!

Regehr might have a serious problem since he is with the other two pushing so hard to cram this ambulance service down the throats of the tax payers. Their half truths with this ambulance just might be the end of him and maybe Works when he seeks another term.

If my polling people and their answers are honest, we just might turn out to have a couple of upsets this time around.

I now also have an Anthony Maness sign in my yard. I am hoping to to see many more soon. As I drive around I am noticing a few more going up. I saw one in Gas also so I am glad to see progression.

Please don't refer to the posts only. They are bias and not informative. They are opinions.
The paper www.iolaregister.com is a decent source for keeping you up-to-date.
Also, please call the candidates. They will all be happy to speak to you. In addition, I encourage you to attend all of the upcoming debates and forums. Those are extremely insightful as to the kind of people that are running (and their experience/intelligence/communication skills).
Good luck and glad to see someone excited and interested in the voting process.

thanks, kansborn. i'm not sure i agree about the newspaper. seems like the articles by mr. symes are very defensive of the county commissioners, and it seems like the sheriff is in the paper every week about something. i dont know him and he may be an okay sheriff, but i am suspicious of anyone getting all good press - all the time.

between you and rooster, i finally came out of the fog and likely will call the candidates. we get so used to being spoon-fed information from the media, forums, and our neighbors that we forget that we can ask questions and collect first-hand information ourselves.

"Please don't refer to the posts only. They are bias and not informative. They are opinions."

Does it really bother you that posters are biased and opinionated? Don't you find any information on those biased and opinionated post about the candidates and issues that you weren't aware of?

A voter should vote based on their OWN opinions about the candidate/issues, not based on those of another. Every person I have encountered is biased in on way or another about a candidate as well as the various issues. Just read the opinions of Susan Lynn, Emerson Lynn Jr., Bob Johnson along with the forum letters printed in the register about the sheriff, ambulance service, swimming pool, and other candidates for office.

Each letter and opinion is biased, opinionated and at times not very informative about the issue or a candidate. The register hasn't given Bill Otto a favorable comment/write up in all the years he has ran for office, yet he is still re-elected.

Some of the blunders of voting for the people the register backs.

Atkins over Murphy. - Paul Morrison as AG over Phill Kline.

So sort out everything you read and hear, then make your own choice on who you feel will best serve the needs of the city/county/state/federal government!!

Then VOTE!!!

Yes, right on. Your last paragraph is exactly what your quoted sentence of mine is saying. "don't refer to the posts only." Don't rely on ONLY the posts in these forums. And no, I've learned nothing from the posts which discuss political people and candidates. The posts have no merit, no facts, no backing, no support - other than that of unknown people who are likely to feel negative about those they are writing negatively about.

I do, however, learn about real-time situations written about in the paper. Do I believe solely what the paper reports? No, absolutely not. That would make me a fool. And the Op Eds are just that...Opinion Editorials. Those are opinions, not facts. But, the stories they report on - the front page, local news, are facts...at least some if not all. That's a good start.
Then, I go to the candidate forums, discussions, town hall meetings etc. (those apply to my previous hometown...not sure when they are scheduled for Iola).

so i am not sure how to get up to speed quickly.

You can always call the candidates to get their views on topics that you are concerned about.

Then again you can IM or email some of the posters for their opinions/views.

There are some past post on City and County Government Forum with many different views/opinions.

Here on the General Forum take your pick of the 3 I found:

Next Sheriff's election? pyro99 Apr-12-08 06:23 PM 41 1916 6.0

Anthony Maness for Sheriff BA Apr-24-08 12:18 PM 20 722

If you would like to contact Sheriff Candidate Maness feel free to IM me and I can get you in touch with him. I know him well and I know he is willing to speak to anyone willing to listen. Anthony is a a homegrown person and is known by many throughout Allen County. I am sure that they will tell you what they think if you make contact with them. I have known Anthony for many years and I can tell you what I know if you are interested. If interested you may IM me on here and I do check this site quite often.

or... i could just look him up in the phone book and call him myself... or (I just found this out over the past weekend) I could go to his website at www.anthony4sheriff.com and click on the button that says contact me. it looks to me like he is saying that he wants the sheriff's office to focus on law enforcement (makes sense to me). a person i know says that as a policeman or detective or whatever - he is honest and doesn't give breaks to big wigs. does anybody know if any of the other candidates (like commissioners) have websites to find out what they believe?
