"public opinion"
Jul-25-08, 08:50 AM (CST)

i am confused. the newspaper said that the iola city commission is going to do whatever they want to about the swimming pool. for example they don't care about public opinion and they are going to build it where the old one was. but now i heard there is a meeting monday night so people can give input about what they want. why bother if the city commission will just do what they decide and don't care what people think? is there no way to make them listen to the voters and then make decisions based on what the voters say? of course i guess if they make the decisions before the voters have a say then they can claim ignorance and say they didn't know that was what the voters wanted.

I just moved away from that town in which I lived for 29 years. I have had my opinion about things that go on in that town for many years but for the most part have kept my mouth shut. Well, no longer! One of the major reasons why the town of Iola and the county will not survive is the same selfish people that have say will always control what goes on. These people in which they know who they are only care about themselves and no one else. How to make their pockets grow biger. They are also the type of people that care about their child or grandchild get to be starters for sport teams, rather the child is good enough or not. The city or county don't look at the fact that a rec facility would benifit the young and old, but why would they care about that since majority of the people that "matter" have their own pools or the money to go out of town for such activities.

Next...sheriff

I had the chance to work for sheriff Williams and let me just put it out there that he dose not do what he should be doing. Well, let me take that back..if you consider going to the golf course, playing golf in your office, watching tv, playing computer games, and taking off whenever you feel like it then I guess you can say he does his job. Also the only time he is out on the streets is when there is a camera to take a picture. I just hope that for the citizens back in allen county would think long and hard at who you would vote for. Don't pick because you think you know the person but pick a sheriff based on who you think will do his job.

Isn't this called representing the people? Nothing I have found states they must do the will of the people, only to represent the residents in what they consider is in our best interest.

I have met more people that want the pool at the park than building at another site. Of course those people all make less than $30,000 and maybe they are the ones that the two commissioners are hearing. I do know both of them heard my opinion long before it hit the paper.

The county commissioners figure it is in our best interest to have one ambulance building located in Gas! Even if we can't afford the higher mill levi it will take to build and maintain it.

The county commissioners are also looking at building a new more modern hospital. Even if we can't afford the higher mill levi it will take to build and maintain it.

I guess maybe the two city commissioners think it is in our best interest to only spend 2 million of our tax dollars for a pool over the 7+ million to build an indoor year round facility.

The school board states it is in our best interest to have a K thru 12 school built in the county with all the athletic facilities along with an indoor pool added so they can take advantage of some grant money. (Guess they forgot that grant money is our tax dollars.) Even if we can't afford the higher mill levi it will take to build and maintain it.

So it is just a matter of figuring out how much of what they are doing is really in our best interest.

What does any of this gibberish have to do with the City Commissioners canceling a meeting for public input and simply deciding themselves? ABSOLUTELY NONE!

I know I've used it before, but your posts are getting old and stale! Same thing over and over.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-08 AT 10:52 PM (CST)

You need to re-read the initial post. She didn't say anything in her post about canceling a meeting but she did ask a few questions!!

My reply was the FACT that the commissioners aren't required or obligated to take input from the public on decisions they make for the residents of Iola. Also to make another point - when if ever has the city or county commissioners ask for public input on any decisions they make? I listed some of their decisions that so far have been made without public input. I also forgot to mention the two generators and the new water plant.

They sure didn't ask for public input when they raised the utility rates nor do they ask for public input when they decide to replace streets that aren't broken. Only time they want a citizen to input on anything is when they are forced to put it on the ballot and let us cast a vote!!

So my post came down to this - When you elect an official, you are basicly giving them the go ahead to do what they feel is best for you even when you don't like it!!

So now you know. This is Iola. What I hear is that some of the flood victims are still waiting for their buyout. Guess the pool is more important than potentially homeless people. After all , a few peoples pleasure certainly must be more important.
Well golly, who needs a home when they can go swimmin' next year?
They are just going through the motions. The people never matter where the government is concerned. The powers that be seem to forget how they got their power .
Just like the county, the city is single minded on what "they" want and don't give a hoot about what the people want or what might be best. It is what they want that counts. Personally I think a pool is frivilous when there are so many people struggling to buy food and pay utilities. Maybe the city could purchase an above ground pool for all residences. Hey, then they could gain on the cost of water for filling the pools.

The solution is to vote em out if the opportunity arises.

hold on county - i have a friend who says the people waiting for the buyout have some sort of trouble getting their titles cleaned up. don't know that the city is responsible for that. guess the city has the money but can't do anything till they get a clean title.

on the pool thing i guess two of them voted against the other and said done deal. maybe you are right about the city buying everyone a pool and that way each person can put theirs where they want to.

My information says that it is only a couple of houses, not all of them. The city should be able to move forward with the ones who are clear.
Otherwise, the ones who chose not to sell will cause everyone to
be cheated.
These homes with a problem may never be clear. Does that mean that all others are not going to get their property sold?
Not right and certainly not fair.
Yes, the city has the money in place and I guess it is a good place.
I think they have dragged it out long enough.
Maybe in a few days they will be able to concentrate their energies on something besides next years recreation.

As far as the buyout goes, look no further than other towns affected by the big flood. Coffeyville for instance has most flooded structures removed and grass growing where they were. No rat infested shells of homes with weeds as high as the eves.

I was through Coffeyville the last weekend in June...there were lots of empty flooded business' and buildings. I did not see any lots that had grass growing on them in the south part of town. The south part of town for the most part is in horrbible shape.
