Is this one of those existential questions, like why is the sky blue? ... To fix something that's broken/in need of repair perhaps?

Ok Don, I take it that is the official statement??? I could have done without your smartas post.
I am not a government oversight activist, but my taxes keep going up and my paychecks stay the same. I believe we should not be paying for things that don't need to be done.
Other than the bridges, that highway was in pretty good condition. Many secondary roads surrounding Iola are in absolutely pathetic shape. I wish my taxes could go to THOSE roads that WE drive on. Is this work going clear to Yates Center?

Quoting shadowperson; "Ok Don, I take it that is the official statement??? I could have done without your smartas post.

Apparently you are doing without a sense of humor as well. If you have taken offense from my reply to your post know that it was not my intention to offer it. I am in no position to make an "official" statement however I would like to offer a suggestion, If I were concerned about the reasons for a particular road repair, I might consider calling the State Department of Transportation, the County Road Department, or whichever applicable agency, and inquire of them, instead of expecting an "official" statement on a public chat forum.

We are all frustrated with seemingly random or apparently senseless government decisions, the high costs of nearly everything, but taking offense from even a poor attempt at humor, does nothing to abate the situation and may compile our frustration with unnecessary ill feelings.

Lighten up shadowperson. Contact the agency that has jurisdiction for that particular section of road to get your answers, and if you don't agree with them contact the proper authorities and voice your displeasure to them. If you believe the project to be a waste of public finances and the people who should be handling the oversight of funds are not doing their job, then let the people of the forum know and you may find you have allies in your campaign against wasted public funds... as citizens and taxpayers, we are ALL "government oversight activists".

But then thats just my take on it...
“Humor is mankind's greatest blessing.” - Mark Twain

I do agree with you on a few points Don. However, I prefer not to publicly speak out. I don't like having the police target me.

So you draw humour at the expense of others? That is not humour imo. Then you attempt to spin it as my fault for not accepting an insult as humourous? What the hell kind of logic is that man?
This thread was posted in hopes that a viewer would have heard or read an official explanation to my query and post his/hear findings. I do not subscribe to the local propaganda daily, nor do I watch tv or have the time or desire to sit around contacting "officials" all day. I am being advised to avoid posting anything in the future and seek answers directly. Isn't this the purpose of a discussion forum? To get information & views/opinions of others? One thing I have noticed, sometimes members of this forum are more interested in being phallic symbols (or better the slang term) and dishing insults than sharing information or a positive opinion to the topic. I shall also say, that there are some dam good posters here as well. I have garnered some pretty good info from a few folks on here, and enjoy reading postings from a few individuals. Hats off to you folks. You know who you are. I'm out!

"Is this work going clear to Yates Center?"

Nope - it appears they are finished because the line marking crew were out on Friday painting the highway.

Don't believe it was broken nor do I believe it required repair.
Of course I only drove on it about twice a day and could have missed the part that was broken since I didn't drive the entire section they were fixing/replacing.

Notice they did part of east 54 by the 169 junction too.

I do believe the State calls that your tax money in action or something stupid like that!!

I noticed on the new part that the bridge approaches were alot smoother. I think the thing they were doing was maintenance, evrything requires maintenance.. Just my thought..

I agree with the bridge approach needing some repair but not the entire five or so miles that they replaced. The first bridge approach headed west did make the semi jump more than it should.

Then again, I couldn't find any bad spots on west 54 that required any maintenance. None of the asphalt was giving way or rutting from the heavy equipment that traveled on it. That can only mean they laid a good foundation for the road to sustain those heavy loads.

Now north/south 169 is a different story. That concrete highway isn't worth the money us tas payers paid for it. It is even worse from Iola north to Garnett than to all points south of Iola. Sectional concrete highways really are a waste of tax dollars.

Would you prefer highway 54 to be as rough as 169 north and south or a smooth drive? I agree that 169 Robert Talkington Highway, south from Anderson County sucks, the one south to Chanute is just as bad. So are you gonna bitch when the state starts fixing that hiway??

Hey timmy, none of the post are bitching, just asking questions and stating facts!!

I'll have you know they already fixed US 169 from somewhere north of Iola to the Neosho County Line!! You can see all the areas with new concrete!! Take a ride in a semi or for that matter in any vehicle and that sectional highway will bumb you all the way. The local rag ran an article about them working on US 169 as well as US 54 in May or June. They worked on US 169 in June of 2007 too and will probably do it again in 2009! Never fails, as soon as it is wheat harvest time they start working on the highways.

As for US 54, except for the bridge areas that highway is worse to ride on now than it was before.

I agree Rooster, the main sretch of the road is worse than before. Went out and drove it yesterday. The bridge lips are much improved, but still a big waste of money imo.
